You are what you eat and fats are a main food for Asia’s fast-food generation. Dr Chwang, director of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. This is a thorough departure from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat. "They like big pieces of fried meat with a soft drink. So also they may eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake (卡路里摄入量) has increased. Now about 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat." says Chwang.

Although the whole Asians tend towards thinness, culture—namely Asians’ hospitality (好客)—is the reason for the fatness of today’s generation, according to Chwang. "Asian people love food." She says. "Eating and drinking are important social and family functions." In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special occasions as people were more careful with money. In today’s climate of wealth and remarkable consumption, 10-course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.

More than anyone else, Children are on the receiving end of their parents’ improved circumstances. "In the past, people had four or more children—now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil them." Says Chwang. "The easiest way is to give them quality food." Parents think feeding them well is showing their love. They feel bad when their children look thin.

When describing the physical condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says: "There is a clear relationship between fatness and indoor play. Children get fat because they don’t move, and eventually, they don’t want to move because they are fat."

Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefer video games to old outdoor sports. "What do children do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games? They eat chocolate and drink Coke." Says Chwang.

62. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

D

A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what , in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.

A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children  who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises(出现) from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.

There also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar(奇怪的)that I don’t know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl-friend.

No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

66. The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is______.

A. repeated without any change                  B. treated as a joke

C. given some changes by the parent           D. set in the present

67. According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is____.

A. in a realistic setting                                B. heard for the first time

C. repeated too often                                D. told in a different way

68. The advantage claimed (提出) for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it_____.

A. makes them less fearful

B. develops their power of memory

C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of

D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs

69. The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that______.

A. fairy stories are still being made up

B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales

C. people try to modernize old fairy stories

D. There is more concern for children’s fears nowadays

70. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that_____.

A. they are full of imagination

B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth

C. they are not interesting

D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach

Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts that are travelling across the continent eating everything in their path.

And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts. "We think this idea will get more people involved in the war on the locusts," said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected regions.

This is West Africa’s biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they breed and increase their number and will soon threaten Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia.

Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the region are not well equipped to fight the pest.

Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it may be inadequate. "We are now treating 6,000 hectares per day with pesticide  (杀虫剂), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster," said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.

Requests are being made for international aid, which is the only way to limit the crisis (危机), the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned.

71. By using "dark cloud" to describe locusts in the first paragraph, the writer ____.

A. West Africa’s united effort in fighting a disaster

B. the difficulty in controlling locusts

C. how locusts caused great damage to West Africa

D. a struggle to fight against a disaster posed by locusts in West Africa

73. The locust disaster _____.

A. would be even more serious in Asia

B. is(was) out of control

C. affected only the warring regions

D. can not be stopped unless twice as much pesticide is provided for the affected areas

74. The word "inadequate" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

A. effective               B. impractical       C. unrealizable    D. insufficient (不足的)

75. Which of the following is wrong?

A. Sud-Fm offered a reward for fighting locusts so that more people would join in the effort.

B. Senegal is to the southwest of Sudan.

C. The locusts can cause such damage mainly because it has no natural enemy in West Africa.

D. 12 countries affected by the plague have united but still lack resources to contain it.

Dear Editor,

I study at a middle school  and I found a surprising thing in school. In our school reading room there is a large collection of used English papers and magazines, such as English World and China Daily. But they were sold as rubbish although they are still useful, I suggest they should be sold at suitable prices to the students in our school. I think this will meet the needs of the students who like English, and the school can also collect some money.

It is not easy to the school to get these English papers and magazines, so we make good use of them.

Yours.

听第10段材料,回答第17-20题

You may like the fat, happy man who brings presents to kids on Christmas Eve. But do you

know why he’s called Santa Claus and why he is dressed in red? The history of Santa Claus begins

in the 4th century with a man called Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas lived in Myra, which is now

called Turkey. He came from a rich family, but he felt sorry for poor people and decided to give

them all his money. Nicholas, though, was shy and didn’t want people to know he gave them

money. So he climbed onto the roofs of houses on Christmas Eve and dropped bags of money down

their chimneys. He wore red clothes when he did this. Nicholas died in 340 AD.
